¡El Mundial!

The Soccer World Cup went from South Africa to five-time champion Brazil. The opening ceremony is this coming Thursday, June 12th, and the first match is Brazil against Croatia. If you are a soccer fan like me, you are probably as excited as I am!

What does this has to do with Spanish?

Fútbol (soccer) is very popular in Spain and Latin America. If you and your children can easily contract la fiebre del fútbol (soccer fever), I would like to encourage you to watch the matches in Spanish. Depending on your channel lineup, you will find a few networks always showing World Cup soccer games in Spanish.

Some of the are: UnivisiónTelemundoESPN Deportes, and Fox Latino.

P.S: El Mundial short in Spanish for "The World Cup."

Spanish Updates

Fourth graders spent the last few weeks of the year getting ready for an interview.

No. They were not going to be interviewed. They were the interviewers.

Last we we had a special guest. Professor Beth Lyon, a human rights lawyer at Villanova's School of Law, visited AFS' 4th graders. She spoke about her personal experience learning a Spanish, as well as the importance of knowing a second language in the USA. As a lawyer with experience in immigrants and workers rights, Professor Lyon highlighted much need help in the legal field for translator and interpreter

words with images.
Through a series of games, exercises and activities, students were slowly getting ready to interview Professor Lyon. Fourth graders knew nothing about her. The purpose of her visit was to have 4th graders interview her. In order to know ANYTHING about her, they had to ask questions in Spanish. The week before Professor Lyon's visit, 4th graders wrote down their questions in English, then translate them (very quickly, I must say) to Spanish.

And they were so excited to get to know her!

See below photos of some of the activities where we reviewed, and also learned, vocabulary.

Thank you to Professor Lyon. Her presentation went far beyond language and culture. We ended up discussing about the global community and equality.

Sopa de Letras (Word Search)
